Resources for First-Generation Students

If you’re a first-generation student, congratulations! By attending college, you have chosen to invest in your future. At Meredith, we recognize that being a first-generation student can bring its own unique challenges. In today’s blog, we go over some on-campus resources to help you thrive during your first year.

Residence Life

As a first-year student, it’ll likely be the first time you’re living away from home. While you live on campus, our Residence Life staff will be there to help you feel safe, supported, and comfortable. Each residence hall floor will be assigned a student staff member, called a Resident Assistant (RA). If you have any questions or issues, whether it be roommate conflict or residence life activities, your RA will be happy to help you.

Additionally, Residence Directors (RDs), who are full-time staff members, live in the residence halls on campus. RDs are available to assist students with social, emotional, and academic concerns.

Student Organizations

Getting involved on campus is a great way to make the most of your college experience. Make new friends, gain leadership skills, continue an interest you had in high school, or try a new one!

With over 100 student clubs and organizations, there is something for everyone. Want to connect with other first-generation students? Join the First Generation Empowerment Network.

Student Success Center

Through the Student Success Center, you’ll be assigned a Success Coach who will act as your go-to person. At no additional cost, they will provide consistent support and guidance throughout your time at Meredith. Whether you need a pep talk or help finding a resource on campus, your Success Coach will be there to help!

Note: Honors students, STEM students, and Teaching Fellows receive individualized guidance through their respective programs, not through the Student Success Center.
